Please remember the Microsoft Visual C++ compiler.  If machine booted DR. DOS 6 (a much better version of DOS) the job to build all example programs bundled with the compiler took __hours__. Boot the exact same machine from MS DOS and the build took a scant few minutes. Use the widely available (at the time) DR. DOS hack tool so it reported itself as the latest version of MS DOS and the build took the same scant few minutes but tech support denied until blue in the face they had any loops or sleep commands in there.

It is actually quite sad that GNU is getting so much put into it and OpenWatcom is languishing.

That compiler was tight and could target CPUs correctly.
