Actually it does. Say you have package X which is no longer developped,
and packages Y and Z which are still actively developped. Y and Z
require newest version of the OS, but X does not work on new version of
OS. You lose X.

(this happens a lot on OS-X since Apple widthdrew support for older
frameworks and the PPC translator).
