If you live in a world of small applications that chain together with pipes
and filters, you add input checking filters in front of the application in
order to mitigate the vulnerability without really fixing it.

Or, of course, you filter something else, like the users.

The more tightly integrated the system is with the outside world, the harder
this becomes.  The more isolated it is, the easier it becomes.
