NonStop is generally used in front of the mainframes. It acts as a
switch. For instance, when credit card transction comes on from a Bank X
onwed terminal, the tandem looks at the card number and decides iof the
card belongs to X (f so, sends transaction to mainframe), and if not,
will send it to the VISA/Mastarcard network depending on card number.
The Tandem ahead of IBM mainframe is also able to do "offline"
transactions, authorizing transactions up to a certain amount and
checking against negative file while the IBM is down for maintenance.
However, i was refering more to stores using computers to process
transactions and send them to the credit card processor. This is where
most of the compromised database events seem to happen. So more robust
OS and applications would be welcome there.
