I do not understand what you are talkning about.
The problems with miss-configured full/half duplex
has nothing to do with "underperforming".

I have not seen that.

Just tested a 7.3 MB file and it transfers over the 100 Mb/s
network in 00.79 sec with a little over 9 MB/s bandwidth. Between
two Alpha DS20e using standard NICs and nothing besides TCPIP
"out-of-the-box". I think that is as good as it can get without
going to Gb NICs.

What did you do when you saw your findings?

There is no reason to test against the SMTP server, of course.
*IF* it is a miss-configured half/full duplex, if will show
against any other server. Like between two VMS boxes...

Miss-configured half/full duplex can be weired. It can work
just well for normal VT-type displays and applications, but
anything doing a little larger transfers (FTP, SMTP, maybe
some printout) might underperform (or rather "hang").
