After Pfeiffer was fired and they could not find a replacement CEO,
Compaq was no longer interested in staying in business period. Hence
Curly called M&A bankers to find a buyer for Compaq.

Note that Palmer did the same. He revealed in an interview ob the day
the emrger was announced that he had worked with Pfeiffer for 3 years to
ditch business areas that Compaq did not want. Alpha was not ditched and
Pfeiffer said he was very interested in Alpha. Alas, Pfeiffer was fired.
