So just to confirm, a $ dir [directory]*ssh*.* returns nothing ?

(And please try the command itself rather than just guessing; it's
potentially important.)

Also, if this doesn't find anything then I am out of ideas for now.

I take it there are no funny ACLs or a UIC mismatch on the target
account's home directory ?

One final thought. Have you worked your way through the section of
the Guide to SSH which talks about solving SSH login problems ?
