You mention that the I/O rates were "normal" for the system.  Were the I/O counts for the processes in the normal range as well?  I have seen this kind of behavior when the disk becomes very fragmented and additional I/Os are required for file accesses.  Window turns and the retrieval of additional file headers may account for this.

Check that and report back.
