Ok, I was hoping somebody put an -X or -Y in there. That would certainly
explain why it wouldn't work ideally if the server end expected to set up
X Windows (DECWindows, or equiv.) and that would explain why it worked or
not depending whether or not there was an .xauthority file present.
On most *NIX OS that doesn't cause the login to fail but it does generate
an error message. Depending how the SSH on VMS works I could see it being a
problem. I'm really surprised this isn't it and I am sorry I couldn't help.
