[Info-vax] HP SAN switch question

I have a DS20E running the latest firmware fitted with a 2Gb/s fiber channel interface. And an EMC SAN storage cabinet, a Clarion <mumble>. 
So I managed to get an HP SAN switch 2/16V. No documentation, no configuration details from a previous owner.
With the switch I got separately three 1000 Mb/s optical interfaces that I put in slots 1, 2 and 3 of the switch.
I connected its serial interface to a pc and ran Putty hoping the box would offer some help. Nothing shows. The ethernet interface has no IP address configured in a range that I've tried.
There are no buttons on the switch on the outside.
There is one LED blinking yellow and green in a 1Hz interval. Next to the led is an exclamation mark which makes me think the box isn't well.

1 Is there a way to talk to the serial interface ?
2 can the switch be returned to factory settings?
3 is the 2/16v a rebadged brocade device, if so which one?

I am reading the wwidmgr guide, perhaps that will give me a clue.
