OK, I made a bad assumption. Brian's situation is a documented no-no which happens to display the same symptoms as the problem reported by a couple customers we have been working for the last couple weeks. We have been in touch with Brian. We will also put up a description of the HP/VSI/architecture/cluster problem and the answer soon.
