Yep - specifically ensured that Addr wasn't there because I suspected this was the problem; it isn't though, because a failed reverse lookup happens relatively quickly - the delay is due to the inability to connect to itself (as observed through TCPDUMP port 53) since the BIND *server* is not running (nor do I want it to be).  I hope that the "solution" isn't going to be: set up BIND on your box to act as a caching server!
