Bill, it is not clear to me how or where you got your licence(s). Perhaps it was in another post.
Since you are new to VMS you wouldn't have any paper licenses that fail to load. Next, you're not doing this for a job so I assume that you got hobbyist licenses from HP's John Egolf.
He sends out a mail with two kinds of text attachments. One text file contains the operating system license, the other has around 100 product licenses.
Copy the attachments from the mail to a directory of your pc. You end up with two text files.
Coy these two files to the computer that is host to your simhVAX.
Start VMS on simh and log in (as SYSTEM).
You've done that before you said. Open the shortest one in notepad (i assume Windows here). Select all text (control-A) and copy the selection (control-C).
On the VMS system enter the command:
$ create myvms.com
Nothing will happen, the vms system waits for you to enter text.
Now if you are using PUTTY as terminal emulator, click the right mouse button: that serves as the paste command for putty. On any other terminal emulator study what particular key sequence is used for pasting text.
The text from the file is printed on the terminal emulator. When it stops enter control-Z on the VMS system.
Next type:
$ @myvms
After that reboot the VMS system. The VMS license ought to show up on the command
$ show license
If it works then repeat the procedure with the other file.
