Slackware! Oldest surviving Linux distro. And for a reason!
Less filling, tastes great! No bloat except what's mandated by gnu
crapware. Essentially no package management, you compile whatever you want
that's not in base. Great user community, no gpl fanboys=low noise level
and as solid and well put together as it gets with Linux.

This was suggested upthread and yeah. It is essential if you haven't used
Linux before. It's hard to hurt yourself badly if you use a VM
with reasonable care and easy to do so without one.
