I think this is the key.  Probably the iPad defaults to a German
keyboard if the language is German.  I'll see if I can change just the
layout and/or see if it changes if I change the language.

It would be nice if the iPad could have an on-screen LK411 layout or, 
even better, allow a real LK411 to be connected to it.  :-)
