Richard,

Instead of mentioning possible solutions, why don't you specify exactly what you 
want to do?  Your mention of many clients and a single "server?" leads me to 
assume (shouldn't do that) that you want to write one or more services.

Note that a "service" is sort of like a specialized web service.  Got to duck 
when Jan-Erik reads this.
