"What's New in CPUs Since the 80s and How Does It Affect Programmers?"

Discusses why cache coherency becomes a limiting factor as sockets and
cores are added, too. Why adding lots of cores and lots of sockets
gets into trouble. Also mentions transactional memory, RDMA, and some
other features of recent x86-64 processors.

Yeah, more than a few of the folks here were using 32-bit processors
back in the 1980s, with VAX or 68K or other such.

Yeah, more than a few of these features have been available in systems
prior to x86-64 — but these features are now far more common, far
cheaper, and just as useful.

See the various links at the bottom, too.
