Users of "modern" operating systems and "modern" platforms might not
recognize this problem — the need to deal with this morass is becoming
rather less common. Most folks either have the necessary packages
built into the platform — more than a few choices for operating systems
do have one or more competent relational database and emacs and vim and
other tools either baked into the platform — or they install pre-built
kits, or — for some of the more advanced folks — they use recipes or
formulas to install the packages. http://brew.sh or such. Yes,
there are developers that do still have to deal with various archive
formats. But it's (thankfully) becoming far less common.
