Huh?
^X ^F should be "Find file". It should never move forward. And at the
filename prompt, you can type '?' to get a list of matching files, or
TAB, which should complete the filename. And if no completion is
possible at all, it will also list available options. (I don't know why
hb suggested ^X ^F space, as that will just insert a space in the filename.
DIRED is slightly different than the listing of available matches in the
file prompting, but if all you want is to pick a file, either works
equally well. Actually, I'd say that if I want to edit a specific file,
I never use DIRED. It's a rather circumvent way of finding files...
^X F is "Set fill column", which is something completely different. :-)
You need to use Emacs more... :-)
