[Info-vax] Where to locate software

Some applications will have specific requirements. For instance Samba,
which I am currently working to port requires a SAMBA$ROOT rooted directory
using a logical name and then there is a specific directory structure under
that location. The installation expects a specific set of protections and
access.
Other application have similar requirements.
Some, as noted, require none of this, just having the image in location that
can be accessed by you and others who might use the application.
Some of the ported applications expect a directory structure similar to that
expected on Linux/Unix and expect to be in /bin or /usr/bin or similar and
expect other paths to exist as well. Much of this can be handled by logical
names rather than having to worry about the specific matching of the
original path structure to VMS device and directory structures.
Good luck with your efforts.
Best,
Bill.

Bill: I know where the Open Source and Freeware is and have chosen a number
of programs to install. My question was really about where to install these
programs in the OpenVMS directory structure. Davdi and Steven have given me
pointers for that.
Thanks
Paul
