Command line completion and filename completion are things that — once 
you've experienced them — it's hard to operate without.

Much like command recall or command editing.    You've been around long 
enough to recall what VAX/VMS V3 to VAX/VMS V4 was like, with the 
advent of recall.  Hard to go back to V3; to without.

Applications?  Applications — particularly those not exposing a prompt 
— could care less about completion, editing, keyboard shortcuts, or the 
rest.   Completely different requirements.
