Conversely, there is an argument for avoiding or at least reducing such things in the repo if you can, since it is difficult to diff them to see what has changed.

For example, a friend is working on a project to store versioned ODF files in a Git repo. He has already decided to store them unzipped, so the individual pieces are in text format as far as possible, and provide separate tools to (re)generate the ODF.
