Version control is a classic example of the old joke “the difference between theory and practice is, in theory there is no difference, but in practice there is”. After all, in theory locking should be good, right? But in practice it’s a productivity killer.
You need real-world experience with modern VCSes before you can appreciate their benefits. Trying to explain them to someone without that experience is essentially futile.
