   Still wondering.  Plucking a random VMS Alpha disc from
the local pile:

ALP $ dire /tota cd1:[000000]sys*.dir       

Directory ALP$DKA600:[000000]

Total of 255 files.

   That's a V7.3-2 kit, from "31-OCT-2003".  (SYSD is
missing, so 255 instead of 256.)  A VAX V7.3 kit had SYS0 and
SYS1.
