Probably worth pointing out that while the first gen. Alpha lacked 
load/store byte/word operations, there was no problems fiddling around 
with bytes or bits in the registers.

One can discuss why the Alpha did not have those load/store instructions 
from the start, but DEC realized pretty soon that the omission was a 
mistake, and added them later on.
