Red Hat seems to be doing ok with zero up front licensing
charges. To their credit, that's how RH was able to "sneak in"
the back door of so many IT shops over the years.

Secret sauce is to drive volume with world leading Customer
Service, SLA expectations, rock solid solutions and Customer
loyalty.

Most Customers are usually willing to pay a little extra for
excellent service and support, but when the cost difference from
a competitor gets to large, then their internal pressures will
cause them to switch to a competitor. One needs to constantly be
on the lookout for these gaps and adjust accordingly.

Yes, the same concept was true decades ago, but its amazing more
companies do not recognize this.
