Imho, "The Machine" was a theoretical solution based on unproven
technologies looking for a problem to solve and lead by a person
looking to make a name for himself in the Linux World (Martin
Fink).

Martin Fink is no longer at HP(E).

HPE core focus seems to now be on high volume infrastructure
products - not those with low volume, long sales cycle solutions.

Even IBM has been struggling to position Watson which is their
equivalent big system alternative to "The Machine". Having stated
this, IBM has been having some recent success, but they have much
deeper pockets to support a long term vision than HPE has.

IBM also has a CEO (Ginni Rometty) with a vision for where she
wants to go whereas HPE has a CEO (Meg Whitman) who is looking to
slash the company and get it ready for a fire sale to the highest
bidder (already slashed from USD $120B to $25B in < 18 months?)
so she can get into US politics.
