There was some discussion about this at the bootcamp this year.  IRRC, the result was that mixed clusters would be supported and that VSI versions of the software would likely be required. And yes, this includes an Alpha version.  This may require an upgrade to V8.4 though.  With the release of the x86 version, there would be enhancements to performance etc that would be "disabled" with Alpha systems being part of the cluster as these enhancements would not be back-ported.  This was part of the discussion.

If there are specific needs for rolling upgrades in a cluster environment, I would suggest that contact be made with VSI directly.  As stated above, these topics are under discussion and investigation.  VSI needs to hear from the customer base on this.
