$ sh log SYS$INPUT
"SYS$INPUT" = "_EISNER$FTA88:" (LNM$PROCESS_TABLE)
$ mc gnv$gnu:[bin]bash
bash-4.3$ dcl 'pipe def/user sys$input fta88: ;
edit/tpu/display=character_cell login.com'
seems to be a way around this limitation.

There were a couple of replies in this news group about emacs on VMS.
21.2, the version on the freeware CD, should work on Alpha/V8.4.
Although I never tried it with GNV (and because I have limited disk
space on Eisner I don't have it available for testing right now) I would
expect it to work, maybe with a similar workaround as above.
