Sure, throw that out there, and then forget to provide some specifics.  Perhaps

drivers ...

Note, I don't do USB stuff, but, I'm guessing that your claim "recognized by 
VMS" and "works well" might not be quite as solid as you claim.  Could also be 
rather stupid drivers that don't know much if anything about removable media. 
They set up for the first media, and have no capability of re-setting up for 
other media.

Now, if you re-boot the system and try the 120G first, does it work?  This is 
the first thing to try.
