I remember someone saying (during the original conference call?) that
8.4 Alpha would be supported in a cluster with 9.x x86. Migration in a
mixed-architecture cluster is something many are familiar with
(VAX/Alpha, Alpha/Itanium) and gives one a chance for easy comparison
when testing things. Since the old architecture is there, there are no
show-stoppers.
I hope that it is still the plan to support this.

Again, a mixed-architecture cluster is probably the best way.
