This is an example of the direct cost of compatibility.   While there 
are ways around this and not the least of which are separate 
installation kits or vastly more complex installations or fat binaries 
or such, "simply" tossing out the oldest of the hardware and the oldest 
of the software can sometimes allow substantial gains for more recent 
configurations.
