First I think string descriptors are good.  Maybe not everything, but shirley 
better than zero terminated strings.

As for item lists, sure, I've learned how to use them.  Not much choice, right? 
  But "proponent"?  No way.  I dislike them.

Which is why I was quick to endorse John McLean's idea.
