And another thing I'd like to see in DCL is 
/OUTPUT=SYMBOL=xxxxx 
with a special warning code for output symbol overflow when the maximum symbol length is exceeded.

(It's not as elegant as it might be but this format might make it easy to integrate with command definitions, command processing and the output system.)

How many times in DCL have you had to redirect output to a file (disk locking, file creation/writing), open the file (read), close it and delete it (disk locking, file deletion), just to get some small piece of data you need?
