That's weird; I cannot explain that difference.

That item code is simply pulling data out of an in-memory data
structure (the UCB -- unit control block) for that device.

It's doing some bit extraction from whatever field contains that
info, but that operation should not be any slower on V8.4-2L2 vs.
any previous version.
