Because there are people who do not identify themselves as a a man or a 
woman. They are somewhere in between. It is a concept we were not used 
to until not to long ago. But then, how long ago is it that homosexuals 
were simply known as perverts? People didn't understand homosexual men 
or women? And not so long ago, we learned about transsexuals. Even if 
these are rather small minorities, it can't hurt to recognise their 
existence, and showing that by using gender neutral announcements. If 
you belong to such a minority, life can be very difficult and confusing. 
For instance, about 40% of the transsexuals have tried to commit suicide.
