No idea if it'll work here particularly given the vintage of Fortran on 
OpenVMS, but netCDF looks spot on...

YACS looks interesting, though it's probably far beyond what you're 
looking for here.  Though the CALCIUM bits allow exporting and 
importing data for C and Fortran code...
