My (very tenuous) understanding based on some reading is that unformatted files are essentially memory maps and you can't expect them to be cross platform whereas stream files are (in theory) capable of being cross platform but it would take a lot of successful tests to make me believe that theory.  ;-) 

That was the genesis of my interest in stream files but by cross platform attempts used "unformatted" by necessity of no Fortran 2003 on VMS.
