I will also add that the output itself should not be overlooked. Everything about console I/O is different for x86. The Boot Manager, SYSBOOT, XDELTA, and the full operating system combine to present an interesting set of intertwined circumstances. This involved writing one new driver, three modified drivers, one driver linked into a different image, and loading them at a different time during the boot process compared to IA64. Some of the changes are due to "always booting from memory disK" and some due to the I/O capabilities of the Boot Manager and when they are no longer available as you switch to the runtime environment. After a lot of work, It all appears to be behaving as planned. I almost forgot - virtual machines! They have their own ideas about a console implementation which may or may not mimic real HW.
