I believe the traditional definition is the 4 V's:
* volume
* variety
* velocity
* veracity

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_data

I would probably phrase it as: "huge amount of different data
that individually is trivial but when combined provides a lot
of insight".

In many ways social media big data is some of the most sensitive
data (and at least by some measures therefore the most important data).

If we look at average Joe and what big data exists on him:

NSA has crunched all his phone connections and emails - and
just concluded that he has never been in contact with any
foreign spies or terrorists.

His favorite supermarket chain has crunched all his
shopping data for a decade or two - and know exactly what
he likes to eat and what laundry detergent he prefers.

Facebook has crunched all his FB page views, his FB likes, his
location when visiting facebook and all the pages using FB
that he has visited - and knows his friends, his hobbies,
his political opinions, his religious beliefs, his sexual preferences,
where he has physical been every day or hour the last decade - they
know everything.
