This is consistent.

Some SIMMs could have been damaged when swapping the memory, or perhaps
bank 1 has had problems for a while (before the swap, the machine had
SIMMs only in bank 0). Probably difficult to tell without swapping the
SIMMs between slots and even machines, which might cause more damage.

At least for a while, I could live with just 1536 MB. Is there any harm
in booting the machine in this configuration?

On second thought, while the machine certainly had 2 GB at one time, I
might have done some swapping years ago, resulting in the present
configuration with 1536 MB. If the machine shows 1536 MB, 1024 in bank
0 and 512 in bank 2, is it possible that all the SIMMs are the same size
but only half of them in bank 1 are showing up? Or does this indicate
that the SIMMs in bank 1 must have half the capacity of those in bank 0?
(They do look different physically, but of course this doesn't mean that
the capacity must be different.)
