That seems to be OK.  The fan runs, lights come on, it beeps, the CD
drawer opens, etc. 

A long time ago I had a similar problem with an AlphaStation 255/233.  
Turned out that a capacitor on the motherboard had failed.  This was 
apparently a common problem with these machines.  Maybe something 
similar has happened.

Maybe after the weekend someone will chime in with some answers to my 
problems regarding memory.  At least for now I would be happy booting it 
with 1536 MB instead of 2 GB, but it appears that two of the 8 SIMMs are 
not working and, since normally each bank should be filled identically, 
I'm not sure that it's a good idea to boot it in such a configuration.
