First I'll say, I don't know of ALL of the choices.  But I'm sure there 
are more than you've listed.

If I were designing an application today, I'd most likely use a 
relational database product.  ISAM and such works, and can be fast for 
updates, but the RDBMS beats the s**t out of it for retrival.  Of 
course, it would depend on the application.

As for VMS, either a DB has it's own locking, or, would use the VMS DLM. 
  The DLM works in a cluster environment, which is a good feature.  I 
will admit that VMS clusters just may not be quite as valuable today as 
in the past.  The systems are much more capable today.

What I'm waiting to see is the persistent memory and memory updates in 
place.  That's going to be a major change.  Software to use such will 
need to be developed.  Database products will need to change, should 
they wish to use such capabilities.

It's going to be interesting, and, I expect to see some significant 
changes in storage products, databases and such.  Perhaps today's 
products won't survive.
