It did NOT precompile with f2c, it was at the time the tightest and most
efficient fortran compiler made and one of the first to support the f90
standards.  It was much better than the DEC compiler, which was itself
pretty good.

It's still available and it is still very popular although they do not have
a vax version any longer: http://www.nag.com/nag-compiler
