The DCL commands used here would be useful, as would the type of tape drive.
Single tape saveset on tape, or multiple tapes?
Has this tape restoration sequence been tested before?
In general, use whatever means the vendor recommends for cleaning the
particular tape drive, check the error logs, try the tape in a
different tape drive, and call for service.
If it's a DDS/DAT drive, just replace it, and replace the media, and
write off the backup. If it's a critical backup and you don't have a
new and working DDS/DAT drive to attempt a restore, send the tape to a
recovery service. DDS/DAT drives and media are not robust. Don't try
to repeatedly restore the DDS/DAT media, as that can further degrade
what is already a precarious situation.
