Issue #1
I do not see a Linux problem.

If someone messes with the production system then things can happen.
I believe you would have seen this problem on any OS.

You should be able to boot on an old kernel and you should be able
to install the old version of the application.
But it may indeed not be Linux'es strong side.

Again I do not see a Linux problem.
I see a difference between the actual need from production and the
contract with IBM.
