Free software licenses that run on cheap commodity hardware are a lot more
welcome in the academic world than free software licenses that run on
proprietary hardware.  Even if that hardware is free too, the maintenance
of the hardware isn't.

But yes, things have come to the state where it will take more outreach
than just free licenses.  A whole lot more outreach.  But it starts somewhere,
and free licenses is a good start.
