Wikipedia says that Ascension Island's main exports are postage stamps, commemorative coins, and the ".ac" domain.  With a bit of creative license, the latter would provide a plausible but improbable reason to have OpenVMS servers on one of the most isolated places on Earth.  :-)

BTW, drilling down into Ascension Island on the Google Trends page for OpenVMS reveals that the interest actually comes from Tristan de Cunha, 1741 miles to the south.  If there is a place more isolated than Ascension Island, Tristan de Cunha is it.  They must be using most of their 3072 kbit/s to research OpenVMS.
