I said "one reason", namely the one which I experienced.  There could 
have been others.

Ring up HP, ask them about buying a VMS system, they sugggest unix.  
Yes, it happened.  Visited the DEC stand at a major trade fair, asked 
about purchasing VMS, was told that unix is the future.  (In the latter 
case, I whined about it here in c.o.v, and a few days later someone from 
DEC actually rang me up and apologized.  Too little, too late, though.)

...namely people who write their own applications.  They need an OS and 
a compiler, that's it.  Even if you see a compiler as an application, 
DEC had the best and this was a reason some people acutally moved TO VMS 
back in the day.
