That's the same theory I wondered about - should the world 
outside SIMH be part of this picture (e.g. Raspbian or whatever)?
Or is Raspbian (etc) something which initially ought to be
mostly irrelevant to this picture? Or something like that.

We know the answer now, thank you to all who helped :)

I actually have most of the necessary bits to reproduce the 
setup in this picture, and have done it on a Linux (albeit 
not on a Pi setup) in the past. I don't have enough time
to try it on my new improved Pi 3 at the moment, although 
it's on my ToDo list. Maybe next year :)
